Treloan River Moorings

Treloan Coastal Farm now has it's own tidal river moorings in the Percuil estuary, off Carrick Roads, close by. For further details please click here or contact the office.

The Falmouth Estuary itself has 14 miles of navigable river up to Truro and is the second deepest natural harbour in the world.

It is common to see huge ships anchored up river among the fields. This estuary is a phenomenal sailing and boating area, full of creeks and harbours. It is only minutes walking away from Treloan.

Greg at Percuil Boatyard can look after all your boating requirements - including service, spares and repairs. The whole locality is full of sailing and boating specialists.

Slipways are available for use at Portscatho, Rosevine, Percuil, Place Manor and St. Mawes. This area is a haven for sailing and boating enthusiasts with its magical creeks, inlets, wildlife, riverside restaurants and sailing clubs. For more information on how to get afloat please click here for Roseland Paddle and Sail. A hire service for canoes, windsurfers, motor and sailing boats is available from Bob Warren at Percuil Boat Yard.

There are some wonderful tours of the area by boat as well as opportunities to use the ferries.

Boat Trips:

The Cornish Belle - This boat tours the Fal and lands at the famous thatched Smugglers Cottage at Tolverne for lunch or cream teas. The cottage and beach were used as embarkation points for D-Day landings and the Smugglers Cottage houses a display and is full of memorabilia of the era.

MV Princessa - Sailing daily around the River Fal and creeks this trip takes 2 hours and offers a comprehensive view of the many features along the river. The Princessa has an indoor dance floor, saloon, toilets, and a triple deck lounge with a license for draught beers, wines and spirits as well as serving tea, coffee, soft drinks and snacks.

MV Tudor Prince - Sails daily around the Helford River viewing many places of interest including many of the settings for Daphne Du Maurier novels. This boat has a lounge, top deck, licensed bar, snacks, tea and coffee and toilets.

Scillonian III passenger Ferry - runs regularly to the Scilly Isles from Penzance offering comfortable facilities and running commentary on the fascinating Cornish and Isle's coastline.

Skybus and helicopter flights also run regularly to the Isles.

Beaches and Swimming

From the farm there is private access to 3 lovely sheltered coves. One of our coves, Peters Splosh, has small boat access and is excellent for those who love the beach, swimming, rock pools and fishing. Treloan Cove and Pencabe are mainly sand and particularly fine swimming and diving areas with good fishing points.

In and around Portscatho are some of the finest beaches on the Roseland. Portscatho has 2 beaches, Tattams and Porthcurnick.

Tattams is located immediately below the Social Club in the village and has parking facilities; it is a sandy beach with rock pools and a view of the harbour. Older children can be watched from the balcony of the social club. Dogs are not allowed onto this beach between Easter and September.

Porthcurnick is a short walk through the village and is a National Trust owned sandy beach with car park, café and toilet facilities. There is slipway access onto this beach from the hamlet of Rosevine or you may park in the large car park and walk down the steps to the beach.

Carne and Pendower beaches are just a short drive from Treloan with a car park and hotel on the beach that serves lunch, drinks and teas. The wide sandy beaches are connected at low tide. Dogs are allowed at all times. Leaflets highlighting walks in the area are available from the post office, the latest one being a geological trail along these beaches or ourselves.

Towan, a long strip of sand with wonderful rock pools exposed at low tide, has relatively flat access, toilets and car park, all run by the national Trust.

Porthbeor, owned by the National Trust is accessible by walking through an arable field and down some steps where you will find a golden, sandy beach awaiting. This is very popular with Treloan visitors.

For those who prefer indoor swimming and sports facilities, there are modern Leisure Centres at nearby Falmouth, Redruth, Truro, St. Austell and Newquay

Walking

The local area is comprehensively covered by Ordinance Survey Pathfinder series: Map No. 1366 scale 1:25,000/ 2 1/2 inches to a mile OR Explorer Series: Map No. 105 scale 1:25,000 / 2 ½" to 1 mile.

From the farm it is just a stroll across the field to reach the villages of Gerrans or Portscatho or the coast, on the South West Coastal Footpath.

The South West Coastal Footpath runs through the land, which provides wonderful walks across parts of the countryside and hidden coves that one would never normally reach.

Public footpaths lead from the doorstep to the Percuil River and Place Manor where visitors can catch a ferry boat to St. Mawes and from there to Falmouth and Truro, with its 14 miles of manageable river, or follow paths to St. Anthony's Head with its lighthouse, birdwatching shelter and Second World War observation post and defences.
