The Local Area

From the farm, it is just a stroll across the field to reach the coast. or the village. From the field there is private access to 3 coves. Peter's splosh, one of the coves, (with small boat access) is excellent for those who love the beach & rock pools or fishing, Treloan cove is mainly sand & a particularly fine & safe swimming, diving area. Scuba diving is another favourite activity of Treloan guests.

There is also the S.W. coastal footpath running through the land, which provides a wonderful walk across parts of the countryside that one would never normally reach, and to secret (hidden) coves.

Public footpaths lead from the doorstep to the Percuil river, where guests can catch a ferryboat to St Mawes, or follow paths to St Anthony's Head with its lighthouse, bird watch shelter and second world war watchpost and defences.

The local village of Gerrans is just 3 minutes walk and Portscatho is a 5 -10 minute walk either along the coastal footpath or across the fields.

The adjacent villages are Gerrans and Portscatho. The village of Gerrans, dominated by the old Church is a 3 minute walk up the lane and has a children's playground, general store, art materials shop, post box and The Royal Standard Pub. The pub has a pool table, take away and restaurant menu and will allow children and pets (under supervision) into the pub and garden at all times. The Roseland Garage is open daily, including Sundays, for vehicle servicing, breakdowns, as well as supplying petrol, diesel and the usual extras. Close to the farm is a large car-park and adjacent squash club which is most convenient for visitors.

Portscatho (or Portscatha as it was called until recently) is an ancient fishing village with a harbour and fisherman's chapel. The village has a supermarket and paper shop open from 7 'til late each evening, a butchers shop, two quality art and craft galleries, a delicatessen that also sells children's beach toys, a shoe shop and post office that also sells local history books, toys and sweets. The boathouse restaurant, under new management, provides restaurant meals and teas, The Plume of Feathers pub has a good restaurant with a take-away menu providing fish and chips etc. Portscatho Social Club has visitor membership available. Once a member, drinks are discounted club prices and you have access to the following facilities: 2 bars and a balcony overlooking Portscatho beach, a gym, Internet computer suite, pool table, games machines, darts and MTV. Children under 12 are allowed in until 7 pm

City of Truro

Situated halfway along the length of Cornwall and mid-way between the county's north and south coasts, the city of Truro stands in a strategic position and one that has led to its development as Cornwall's centre of administration and its more recent growth as a touring and holiday centre.

Truro is an ancient market town which still retains its rural market atmosphere and character.

Truro's cathedral, built during the late 19th century, dominates the city centre in a quite remarkable way but does not detract from the charm of some of the Georgian streets. One of the most interesting of the buildings is the museum and art gallery which houses a splendid collection, telling the story of both Truro and Cornwall, including its mining history.

A great deal of change has taken place in Truro in recent years but many of the winding streets and bye-ways of the central area survive, as do through fares and buildings of the Georgian and Regency periods. The principal road known as Lemon Street, for example, is one which any city could well be proud. It is lined by elegant Georgian buildings (including the Royal Hotel) and at the top of its long gentle slope is the prominent Lander Monument.

There are two busy covered markets to augment the shops and on Lemon Quay is the Creation Centre, an arcade of specialist shops beneath the same roof as the Pannier Market. On the outskirts of Truro in Newquay road is one of the most modern livestock markets that serve the whole of Cornwall.

Truro has the plaza cinema in Lemon Street and a surprisingly wide range of venues for 'live' events. The Hall for Cornwall, refurbished for the Millennium in the old County Hall, now provides a much larger variety of entertainment making use of modern multi-purpose facilities. Other events take place frequently at other halls and centres throughout the city.

Every Wednesday of the year (except during August) folk dancing can be enjoyed at Playing Place Community Centre.

The Cathedral is home, throughout the year, to a variety of concerts and has, since 1981, been the venue each June, of the Three Spires Festival.

Alongside Truro River is Boscawen Park, the city's main open space, with tennis courts, cricket, football and hockey playing pitches. Opposite the park is the lovely Swan Pool with a pleasant circular walk.

Also providing major "open space" is the River Fal which, between Truro and Falmouth (14 miles), is one of the most beautiful stretches of water in this country.

With plenty of amenities for the full enjoyment of leisure and with, all around it, beautiful and historic Cornish countryside, Truro has a great deal to offer all who come to see it - be they tourists, intending residents or future industrialists. A warm welcome awaits them all.
